Fit for the Future? The Green Standard 2007-08 Review of the Parties has been released in the run up to the Autumn 2008 party conference season. Read it here along with the accompanying press release and supportive advertisement that went out in The Times on the morning of the report's release. You can also write to party leaders, urging them to act on its conclusions.
Our 2007 assessment of the parties welcomed the prominence given to the environment. A year on, we’ve seen a retreat on the environmental agenda by the three main parties. Some politicians seem to believe that the economic downturn and rising cost of living reduce the importance of action on the environment. That view is wrong. Parties that are fit for the future would see the economic downturn as an opportunity to prepare Britain for the transition to a low-carbon economy.
The latest assessment takes a look at the highs and lows of the three main parties on the environment between September 2007 and August 2008. It draws on the six tests for environmental leadership set out last year, as well as taking the current economic climate into account.
